The roster behind that crest is much wider. The fraternity, founded at Howard in 1914, has put men into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the West Wing of two African presidencies, and onto the front lines of every major civil rights march of the twentieth century. This list of famous Phi Beta Sigma members across politics, sports, and entertainment is not a “best of” ranking. It is the proof that the motto “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity” was never just a slogan.

Where the Sigma Story Started

Phi Beta Sigma was founded on January 9, 1914 by three Howard University students: A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown. They built it as a counterweight to fraternities that prized exclusivity, opening the door to brotherhood, scholarship, and a public service mission. The Phi Beta Sigma Education Foundation followed in 1934, and the National Bigger and Better Business Program arrived in 1937 to push Black entrepreneurship. The organization is also the only NPHC group with a constitutionally bound sister sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, chartered in 1920. Today Sigma runs more than 700 chapters worldwide.

Sigmas in Politics: Presidents, Mayors, and Movement Builders

The political ledger surprises people who only know Sigma from yard culture. Brothers have led nations, written legislation, and stood at the front of the civil rights movement across continents.

Heads of state:

Nnamdi Azikiwe: first President of Nigeria.

Kwame Nkrumah: first President of Ghana.

William R. Tolbert Jr.: President of Liberia from 1971 to 1980.

U.S. lawmakers and civil rights icons:

A. Philip Randolph: founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first major Black labor union.

John Lewis: Georgia congressman, chairman of SNCC, organizer of the Selma to Montgomery marches.

Elijah Cummings: long-serving Maryland congressman.

Huey P. Newton: co-founder of the Black Panther Party in 1966 and architect of the Free Breakfast Program.

Harold Washington: first Black mayor of Chicago, elected in 1983.

Benjamin F. Chavis Jr.: youngest executive director in NAACP history and lead organizer of the 1995 Million Man March.

Why the political line runs so deep

Three African heads of state from a single Black Greek-letter organization is not a coincidence. The founders’ insistence on inclusivity attracted students who saw the fraternity as a launching pad for self-government, not a social club. The line runs straight from the 1914 founding at Howard, through Randolph organizing the 1963 March on Washington, to John Lewis’s last vote on the House floor.

Sigmas in Sports: Hall of Famers, Olympians, and Super Bowl Champs

Sigma athletes have dominated NFL rosters and Olympic finals for decades.

The sports section is where Sigma’s footprint goes from impressive to almost unfair. Four members sit in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, two more anchor the basketball and baseball halls, and one was the most decorated American sprinter at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Jerry Rice

The consensus greatest wide receiver in NFL history. Three Super Bowl rings with the 49ers (XXIII, XXIV, XXIX), Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame. Pledged Delta Phi at Mississippi Valley State and set NCAA records with quarterback and fellow Sigma Willie Totten as the “Satellite Express.”

Emmitt Smith

The NFL’s all-time rushing leader and a Pro Football Hall of Famer, with three Super Bowl rings as a Dallas Cowboy and a 2006 Dancing with the Stars trophy for good measure. Crossed at Zeta Kappa, University of Florida.

Hines Ward

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver, Super Bowl XL MVP, and a two-time champion. Built his Hall of Fame case on the blocking nobody else wanted to do, out of the Zeta Nu chapter at Georgia.

Richard Sherman

Stanford cornerback, Super Bowl XLVIII champion with Seattle’s Legion of Boom, four-time All-Pro. Crossed at Beta Tau.

Walter Dix

Two-time bronze medalist in the 100m and 200m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and one of the fastest collegiate sprinters of his generation at Florida State.

More Sigma athletes worth knowing:

Lou Brock: MLB Hall of Famer with the Cardinals and a former stolen-base record holder.

Willis Reed: Knicks center and NBA Hall of Famer, the man who limped onto the floor for Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals.

Ryan Howard: Phillies first baseman and 2006 NL MVP.

Joey Porter: Steelers linebacker and Super Bowl XL champion.

L.C. Greenwood: anchor of the Steel Curtain defense with four Super Bowl rings.

Claude Humphrey and Jackie Slater: Pro Football Hall of Famers, with the Falcons and Rams respectively.

Braylon Edwards: 2004 Biletnikoff Award winner at Michigan and All-Pro receiver.

Charlie Strong and Mike London: head football coaches at South Florida and Howard.

Sigmas in Entertainment: Actors, Musicians, and Modern Voices

Sigma entertainers cover gospel, jazz, sitcoms, and internet comedy.

Sigma’s entertainment list reaches from Harlem Renaissance scholarship to Vine virality. The fraternity has never funneled brothers into a single “lane,” and the names below all chose their own.

Actors and screen creators:

Blair Underwood: L.A. Law, Quantico, and a forty-year career across prestige television.

Clarence Muse: early Hollywood pioneer and one of the first Black actors to sign a major studio contract.

Andrew Bachelor (King Bach): the most-followed creator on Vine at its peak, now a working actor in film and television.

Flex Alexander: sitcom actor and stand-up comedian, Kappa Delta Sigma in San Francisco.

Musicians and broadcasters:

Bobby Jones: host of the Bobby Jones Gospel Hour, the longest-running show in BET history.

Kurt Carr: Stellar Award winning gospel artist, composer, and choir director.

Everette Harp: contemporary jazz saxophonist on Blue Note Records.

James Anthony Brown: comedian on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

The variety is the point. The fraternity never tried to produce a single archetype of “the Sigma entertainer.” A chapter line will gladly claim a Renaissance poet, a gospel host, and a Vine star in the same breath.

Honorary Sigmas Worth Knowing

Honorary membership lives on its own ledger. These men were initiated for cultural contributions that aligned with the fraternity’s mission, rather than through a college line.

Harry Belafonte: singer, actor, and lifelong civil rights organizer.

Al Roker: Today Show weatherman.

Walter Turnbull: classical musician and founder of the Boys Choir of Harlem.

Preston Edwards: founder of Black Collegiate Magazine.

What Ties the Crest Together

The Sigma roster keeps growing because the standard is service, not celebrity.

Run the list end to end and one pattern repeats: the brothers who became famous did so by serving something larger than themselves. Lewis marched. Newton fed. Carver invented. Rice and Smith have spent decades giving back to the college towns that made them. Sigma also sits inside the broader Divine Nine, and the same service-first instinct shows up in chapter programs across all nine organizations. The motto “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity” is not a tagline the fraternity grew out of, it is the filter that decides who the wider world ends up remembering. The next generation of Sigmas, on chapter lines right now, inherits both the roster and the standard. The crest still has room.

Sigma Questions, Quick Answers

Who are the most famous Phi Beta Sigma members?
The shortlist usually opens with Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, John Lewis, Huey P. Newton, Harold Washington, Alain Locke, and Blair Underwood, plus the African heads of state Nnamdi Azikiwe and Kwame Nkrumah.

What famous athletes are members of Phi Beta Sigma?
Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Claude Humphrey, and Jackie Slater. NBA Hall of Famer Willis Reed. MLB Hall of Famer Lou Brock. Olympic sprinter Walter Dix. Add Richard Sherman, Hines Ward, Joey Porter, and Ryan Howard for good measure.

Was any U.S. president a member of Phi Beta Sigma?
No sitting American president has been a Sigma. The fraternity does claim three African heads of state, however: Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and William R. Tolbert Jr. of Liberia.

Is Al Roker a Sigma?
Yes, Al Roker is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Where can I learn more about the fraternity itself?
The official site at phibetasigma1914.org publishes current programs, chapter directories, and Founders Day materials.

A look at the most famous Phi Beta Sigma members across politics, sports, and entertainment, and the service ethic that unites them.

[5

post-381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-greek-life-divine-nine
["GET
