Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 and now unites more than 390,000 members, and the legacy provision recognizes candidates whose close relatives are sorors. Being a legacy is an acknowledged relationship, not an automatic path to membership.
Who Counts as an AKA Legacy?
Alpha Kappa Alpha defines a legacy candidate by a specific set of family relationships to an active or deceased member. A legacy is a member’s:
- Daughter
- Granddaughter
- Adopted daughter
- Stepdaughter
- Legal ward, meaning a court of law has legally placed her permanent care, control, and custody with a member (court documentation is requested)
Relationships outside this list, such as nieces or cousins, do not qualify for legacy status under the sorority’s definition.
The AKA Legacy Provision Requirements
The legacy provision has its own eligibility rule tied to the sponsoring relative. The living family member must have been active for at least four years, defined as forty-eight consecutive months, immediately preceding submission of the legacy application. This applies to both undergraduate and graduate legacy applications. A legacy applicant is not voted upon by the chapter, but she must still fulfill all other membership requirements. The family member can verify eligibility with the sorority before the candidate submits a legacy application.
Does Legacy Status Guarantee Membership?
No. Legacy candidates are not guaranteed membership. A legacy must still meet the same academic, enrollment, and process requirements as every other applicant, including the required grade average and completion of the official Membership Experience. Membership is obtained only through that official process, and once a chapter accepts a legacy application and forwards it to the corporate office, the candidate’s classification cannot switch from legacy to non-legacy.
